Why Real Madrid Have 'Total Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team chase future success.
After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
