This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
