The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
