The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
