The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of the state is enduring dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified fire dangers and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

An Update Shows An Absence of Dryness

The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that all of California is without dry or drought conditions. This change came after multiple above-normal rainfall that helped fill key lakes like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their historic averages.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

The journey here involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, regions like northeastern California were still classified as experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 finally erased those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

However, hydrologists note that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This snowpack, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. Water officials point out that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the months to come.
