The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
