The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
