Outrage Explodes as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism
Individuals from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Post
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Party
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared members in his political party to defend the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the shooting of another political figure.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
