Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.

Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
